The Power of Networks

We've all become intertwined in networks in some way. But never before has networking been such an impressive and powerful force as it is today. We have officially crossed the threshold from social networking and connecting to full fledged growth and creation on a monumental scale!

Kickstarter is one of the many portals fueling this movement. On July 9th, just a few days ago, a Kickstarter project called "OUYA: A New Kind of Video Game Console" was launched with the intent on raising $950,000 dollars by Aug. 9th. Instead, this project raised over 2 million dollars in under two days!!!!!

What does this mean? It means that the corporate powerhouse is ground level. Regardless of who you are or how much money you have, we have the technology and networking capacity to create ANYTHING!!!! Just enter your good ideas and watch the world take storm!

Man Vs. Woman, What's the Difference?

Even before we're born, we're identified as a sex. Boy or girl? We're raised with ideals that tailor to these specific details and it shapes our reality. But what exactly does it mean? Whats the point?

While there are those who stress about the choice of gender, I simply choose to accept it. I don't see the issue with being raised as a boy with male ideals or vice versa. On the other hand, I simply see it as a relation of social ques to natural hierarchies and genetic pre-dispositions. The importance isn't what gender you are or what gender you think you should be, it's what choices should I make now that I am a male/female?

In the rest of biology and nature there is little thought to gender simply because of the fact that in other species gender can change at the drop of a hat. The reason I think we stress out about it is because it's yet another thing in our lives that we feel we can't control.

What is Life Really? Exploring the Vast Possibilities

It's amazing to the extent that we think we know what life is. We have discussions like "What is it to be Human?" and "What is nature?" but at the same time we have no idea to the full extent that life is possible or even conceivable.

This video inspired this train of thought for me. This simulated exploration of man made probes on a vast and unimaginable alien planet spur the thought of "What is the REAL extent that life can be?"

The Role of the Creator

We have all created something in the time that we've been alive. For most of us it's those macaroni pictures in the 4th grade, and for others it's anything from adjustments to your bike or even creating 10x scaled models of toys from blue foam. Now most of these things are easily made and easily disregarded without any ill effect to the rest of the world, but what happens when a serious discovery is made and the creator doesn't care for their creation the way they should? What if like Dr. Victor Frankenstein we were to abandon our greatest creations because of fear and "leaping before looking" into our desires?

Dr. Frankenstein, from the Mary Shelly novel, discovered the secret to animating life to lifeless matter. Upon doing this he stopped at nothing to create his "perfect" creature from dead flesh. His rash decision to rush into production without thinking resulted in the creation of a demonic beast and a blight on humanity which would be of the ultimate cost to Victor and those he loved. It's narratives like this that make me fear for the future. In our present time, scientists are mapping the human genome, creating synthetic cells, and ushering in a new age of self automated and smart technologies.

My point is, are we moving to fast? Are we creating our own frankenstein monsters without even realizing it?

Man Vs. Nature

Why is it that man constantly desires to fight against the forces of nature?

I've begun to think about this in response to reading the beginning of Marry Shelly's Frankenstein. The story begins by depicting the life of a boy who is enthralled with the beautiful, but also with the abnormal. He's perplexed by the relation between beauty, nature, and control. Eventually he develops an interest that can only be satisfied through experimentation, which eventually leads him down a dangerous path for which he was not prepared.

Now as an industrial designer, I can understand some of this desire to not only "understand" nature but also "control" it. For me it stems from a desire to test my own boundaries. I want to see just how capable I am and where my limits lye.

Perhaps this is what drove the doctor as well. Perhaps he never really believed he could create a monster, but in the back of his mind always wondered how close to the mark he could get.

What is Perfection and Beauty?

This is a subject I've thought a lot about over the past few years. Not so much beauty, but definitely "What is Perfection?".

To me, Perfection is a goal. However, it's a goal that can never be achieved. Perfection is an idea that feeds our desire to be better but in itself is an obsession if taken too far. I believe the idea of perfection to be against the very essence of what humanity is. Sure there would be benefits to being perfect, but at the same time it's our imperfections that make us unique, and in a sense "beautiful".

So i guess what I'm saying is that the pursuit of perfection is noble and even commendable, but to obsess over perfection is naive and demonstrates just how imperfect we are.

Stuff

I like do do stuff. I like to do a lot of stuff. I like to imagine stuff, design stuff, and make stuff. I like to talk to people about stuff and I like to argue about stuff. I like it when stuff randomly happens to me and I like it when I can plan stuff accordingly. I like stuff thats interesting and unique. I like stuff that is comical and active. I like stuff that inspires me and I like stuff that confuses me.

In general, I like stuff. Whatever that stuff may be.
